Alison and I picked Venezuela as the site of our 25th
wedding anniversary celebration. It's a beautiful place
with lots of nice people, but it is the most difficult place
below the true rate, that no bank will touch the
country's currency, so you have to bring dollars and
trade them on the black market. A lot of hotels and
restaurants charge as much as they do here, and while
there are many bargains they are often difficult to find.
The inflation rate rages at above 30 percent, and the
country's murder rate should make Chicago blush for
complaining. I would advise against a trip there until
(if?) the people can get rid of Chavez, who by the
accounts of most Venezuelans is destroying the
economy.
Scarlet ibis and other colorful birds fill the vast expanse of Los Llanos in the Orinoco River basin.
Called the Serengheti of South America, this area has a lot of cool wildlife.
Alison displays a pirana, the first fish she
ever caught. She later ate it.
We saw a giant anaconda on the far bank, but could
only catch up to this little guy.
The diving and snorkling off Los Roques is
excellent. Here's a baracuda.
The elusive pink river dolphin.

Polls say only 28 percent of Venezuelans want
Chavez to stay on as president. Most hate him.

A real cowboy on Los Llanos.
About 3,300 Bolivares (around $650), all in
twenties. This wad was hard to hide.
