This 1,700-sq-ft cottage on 12th Avenue sold in 2007 for
$360,000. Many choose the Aves for the view (below).
The Avenues rise above Salt Lake City on a
hill north of town. The prices tend to rise with
elevation, and the homes get newer as you
climb. The lower Avenues are Utah's bohemia.
It's a liberal enclave in one of the union's
most socially conservative states. But you
don't have to vote for Ralph Nader and drive
a hybrid to enjoy the area. It contains some of
the city's most interesting old architecture
and its highest concentration of Victorians.
The Avenues run from about 100 East to 1300
East, up the hill from South Temple to the top.
It doesn't have a cute business district of its
own, but it's close enough to Gateway, Trolley
Square and all the businesses that line 400
South that residents manage just fine. Prices
range from the 300s to the multiple millions.
The Avenues climb the hillside on the north end of Salt Lake City. In general, the prices rise with the elevation.
With Salt Lake City at their feet, kids play soccer on the field at Ensign Elementary School in the Avenues.
