Before you are ready to buy, however, there are a couple of things you ought to do:

1. Check your credit score. The lower your credit score, the higher your interest rate. Score too low and no
one will give you a mortgage. You can check your score at
Freecreditreport.com, or check with your mortgage
lender. Don't have one? Then . . .

2. Call a good lender. I recommend Kelle Smart at Academy Mortgage (801.486.5800) and Rory Hackett of
The Lending Group at
(801.580.2609). Plumb & Co. real estate agents have worked with Kelle and Rory for
decades. They are efficient, honest and nice as all get-out. Being pre-approved for a loan is a must before
making an offer.

3. Educate yourself. Make an appointment with Kirk  to see houses in all the neighborhoods of the area you
are considering. Then see all the houses in the neighborhood you choose that fit your criteria (IE, price,
bedrooms, baths, style, garage space, ect). If you do that, you will know a great house when you see one, and
you will know whether it is being offered at a reasonable price.

4. Read the contracts now. There is a small pile of paperwork that goes along with making an offer for a
house. Besides the six-page Real Estate Purchase Contract, you will be signing an agency disclosure form, a
buyer due-diligence checklist and, in homes built prior to 1978, a lead paint disclosure form. Kirk will be happy to
sit down and go through these forms with you. For now, click on the links below for a preview:
A. Buyer Checklist.
B. Lead Paint Addendum
C. Agency Disclosure
D. Real Estate Purchase Contract

5. Check out the schools. Whether or not you have kids, buying a home near a good school is always a good
investment. Check
The Best Schools link for school information.
