Sugar House Utah, Salt Lake City's best neighborhoods, has the greatest weather of any big city in the country. I
have lived spent years in states in all the other regions of this country, and Sugar House is the easy weather
winner among places that have seasons. I won't argue with Southern Californians who love their year-round
temperate weather, because I can't change personal taste. But if you like four distinct seasons, Sugar House Utah
is your place.
Winter: This winter has had a lot more snow in the Salt Lake Valley than we are accustomed to. I spent several
winters in my 30 years here during which I only had to shovel snow a couple of times the whole season. Since
early December this season, we've been shoveling a couple of times a week. This is great for skiers (Click here
for ski conditions), but I'm sick of it. Luckily, this is an anomaly. It rarely gets very cold here. The average daily
highs in the winter are in the upper 30s. The lows typically are in the 20s. We can get inversions here, during
which cold polluted air is trapped in the valley by a lid of warm air, but they usually don't last very long.
Spring: How about turquoise skies with big puffy clouds and a high of about 75. That's spring in Sugar House
Utah. We can get some showers, but the total annual precipitation in this second-driest state in the nation is only
about 16 inches.
Summer: Don't expect a lot of rain during summer in Sugar House, but that helps keep down the humidity. So
even though temperatures top 100 a few times each season and average in the 90s all summer long, you can get
out and do things in it. I have jogged at noon on 100-degree days here and felt more comfortable than 85
degrees in muggy Atlanta. And if the heat does get to you, hop in the car and take a 30-minute drive up to 10,000
feet in one of the nearby canyons.
Fall: It's a lot like spring, except that the leaves are more colorful. Last fall (2007) we had mild temperatures until
Thanksgiving. Most years, the weather turns cool and wet closer to Halloween.
